Balenciaga Fall RTW

Paris Fashion Week has officially begun! And I'll start off with one of my fav designers-right behind Dior and Lanvin-Balenciaga. This was a starkly different collection from anything Nicolas Ghesquière has shown in the past recent seasons. As he put it, "High tech is over", which I found hard to believe, seeing how the fashion of high-tech has become synonymous with the designer. This show was a relaxed, more laid back look. Yes, the shoulders are still raised a bit, but no longer are the suits and skirt suits that resemble costumes from the Terminator (bit I was a fan off these). The hard-edged look that Ghesquière has worked so hard to be known for, has now been replaced with soft silhouettes with a looser fit, led by a plethora of beautifully draped silk pieces, most notably the skirts-which I'm sure will be a BIG hit. The color pallets went from icy metallic hues to bold yet soft colors in structured, sophisticated very "French" patterns. The less pretentious and less innovative look is welcome with open arms in my book. And the shoes- I'm a fan too. Not a bad start for Paris after all.

Vintage Find

I love this vintage mid-50's day dress by Nelson-Caine. It showcases a cinched waist accompanied by pleating (which I rarely advise), and darting at the chest. The shape is vintage and iconic, yet would be perfect for modernism as well. What works best however, is the black and white color pallet, which really comes alive with the removable corsage, which adds new life to the piece. The shape and color palette is right on track with current collections, and could even look great with black leggings, but mostly a great pair of red heels. And at $95- it's a steal. Ooh La la!

Lohan Goes Glam

For its 70th Anniversary Issue, Glamour magazine is rounding up a gang of A-listers to show iconic looks from their magazines 70 year history, My personal fav-Lindsay Lohan as the Material Girl Herself.

Dress like Burberry

If you want to capture the look of Burberry Prorsum's new collection, there are just a few things to jot down:

  • Tweed (trousers are most appropriate)

  • Khaki (overcoats and trenches)- which also makes me thankful for snatching up that beige Burberry Prorsum button up about 3 weeks ago.

  • Black (Detailed, all black ensembles with heavy cuts and silhouettes-most noteably a black dress with a Victorian feel)

And there you go- lookin' just like a Burberry Prorsum runway champ.

D&G For Me!

Can I just say I LOVE D&G's new collection? LOVE in all caps is not something I often dish out; it's a territory I usually reserve for Jacobs and Lagerfeld, with the occasional Galliano allowance. After all, this is a recession, and going easy on the "LOVE's" is my way of being fiscal. I LOVE the rich color palette of the pieces, the lush fabrics, and the prints that are an ode to the Victorian era. The silhouettes are dispersed, going from sleek hot pants to vaulted structured skirts. Like most other designers, the clothes are generally less fitted, and appear to be a tad looser than previously before. To me the collection is French fashion at its finest- rich in detail, exorbitant in quality, and light years ahead in innovation, all while telling a story; the story here is that of 12 different operas, and the heroes that came with each. My only complaint is that in some spots (and I say this with LOVE), things tended to veer away from what I though was "pretty". There were dresses that I could have sworn were made from a curtain or duvet, and belts that resembled curtain pulls. And the jeans? I think the D&G boys got a little gung-ho with the bedazzler. But other than that, this is a collection worth spelling out in all caps.
*PS- If I were a woman, I would sell my mode of transportation to own the outfit pictured. That's all I'm saying.

The Mod-Squad

Cruciani's new show from Milan Fashion Week showcased what I would consider to be one of the most reflective collections of 60's culture in quite some time. The cuts, the knit fabrics, the colors and the patters, all lent to the idea of a vintage look, yet with a modern feel. It appears as though the millennium will be the next hey-day of 60's inspired fashion, just as the 90's were with reflecting, and revamping what had been done in the 70's.

Missoni Fall 2009 RTW

It's gonna be all about tons and tons of layering this Autumn, according to Missoni anyway. Piles and piles of knit wear on top of the next, all in neutral mundane shades made up the collection. With scarves long enough to reach Heaven itself, and fabrics as thick as they come, this collection looked nothing short of the most comfortable thing ever seen on the runway-at least in my opinion. There were some sweet accents of blue along the way, which somehow made the collection even more tranquil. The overall, and most obvious of the trends to be set was the idea of very loose silhouette, something I personally find refreshing. Even the cotton knit leggings had wrinkles from the loose fit. Wrinkles encouraged? Only in fashion.
